By BBN Staff: In today’s sitting of the Senate, Senator Mark Lizarraga called for transparency of Government assistance packages.
Lizarraga said that the OPEC loan is for increasing the coverage of the food assistance program which will benefit the Belizean people.
Lizarraga called on the government to provide a breakdown of expenditures of the Boost, food pantry and to examine the impact it is having.
“This would have been to know financially where we are. Yes, we need to borrow this money to help our people at this time so we will support this motion. People are in need and as legislators, we must help. We also have to be aware of the big picture and the financial situation,” Lizarraga said.
He also reminded that the loan is not ‘free’ money and it must be paid back by Belizeans.
He further urged for transparency in the programs by providing details of expenditure and financial reports.
