Senator Mark Lizarraga raises concerns about political interference in food assistance programs

Posted: Wednesday, July 29, 2020. 11:31 am CST.

By BBN Staff: In discussing transparency among government programs to assist the Belizean people during COVID-19, Senator Mark Lizarraga raised concerns of political interference in handling certain programs.

He questioned: “How do people get on the list for assistance?

How do people qualify to be on the list?”

Lizarraga said that he has seen on the news and social media, people sharing their sentiments that people of a particular political persuasion have first preference for benefitting from these programs while others have not received assistance.

Lizarraga made a plea to view documented strategies and to see what government priorities are.

Lizarraga requested to view quarterly reports to see where the country is with a focus to ensure that allocations are being made to areas where the country most needs them.

He further encouraged everyone to read the International Monetary Fund (IMF) report as it provides advice on how to strengthen transparency in the management of public funds.
