Health Minister issues stern warning after a spike in COVID-19 cases

Posted: Monday, August 3, 2020. 11:12 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Minister of Health Pablo Marin opened today’s meeting of the House of Representatives with a stern warning to Belizeans to continue to adhere to his Ministry’s protocols.

The experiences of our neighbors, he suggested, does not appear to have reached the consciousness of Belizeans, if pictures of those out partying and traveling to the cayes on social media are any indication.

But that does not change the fact that people are getting sick and even dying at unprecedented rates

He stated that while he does not want to return Belize to lockdown, it may yet become necessary if Belizeans continue to ignore the edicts of wearing of face masks (covering the nose and mouth), social distancing (6 feet), hand washing and others.

He also took the opportunity to thank frontline workers and others who have supported the Ministry during this time.

Belize currently has 57 cases of which less than 20 are active, with two deaths.

The House is currently considering amendments to Acts to allow the incipient Ministers to make statutory regulations concerning matters related to immigration, hotels and tourist accommodations and quarantine and health concerning infectious diseases.
