Police “to get tough” on COVID-19 regulations

Posted: Monday, August 3, 2020. 7:40 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Police Department has issued a warning: comply with the COVID-19 regulations or you will pay.

This morning on social media, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams questioned why, if Belizeans are so afraid of the virus, do they not make every effort to comply with the outstanding regulations concerning wearing masks, social distancing and limiting essential movement.

So, he concluded, police will have to step up enforcement. Masks must be worn covering mouth and nose except in the exceptions provided for in the regulations; and authorities will arrest violators and close down functions including bars and nightclubs not adhering to the regulations.

These regulations are Statutory Instruments 94 and 95 of 2020, in effect since the start of July when the national State of Emergency was lifted.

Violations draw fines of $5,000 or 2 years in jail. Depending on circumstances, the offender will be quarantined at their expense after testing.

Belize currently has 56 reported cases of COVID-19, of which less than 20 are active.
