PUP says Collective Bargaining Agreement between Port and Christian Workers Union is victory for Belize

Posted: Monday, August 3, 2020. 10:06 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, the People’s United Party (PUP) issued a statement saying that the fact that the Christian Workers Union (CWU) and the Port of Belize Ltd. (PBL) were able to reach and sign off on a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), for the first time in 16 years, is welcomed.

“ The People’s United Party extends its sincere appreciation to those representatives of the union who stood strong in their resolve, and to the representatives of PBL who sat down at the table to ensure that an agreement benefiting both parties could be reached,” the PUP said.

The party says that the agreement was a victory for unionism, a victory forged by Stevedores standing shoulder to shoulder for hours, joined by their sister unions to show strength and solidarity.

The PUP further added that it was also a victory for the Port which was willing to sit at the table and chart a path forward for the good of the company and the workers.

“  It was also a victory for Belize because the closure of the Port has impacted all of us negatively,” it added.

The PUP calls on the Port to reinstate those thirty-six (36) workers who were terminated on grounds of redundancy.

“ The nation faces an unprecedented crisis resulting from two pandemics – COVID-19 and UDP incompetence and greed.  Our people need their jobs to be able to support their families.  It is the right thing to do,” the statement ended.
