By BBN Staff: In a bold move in today’s house meeting, Minister of Foreign Affairs criticized his government for failing Belize City’s youths, particularly the young men on the Southside. Elrington reluctantly supported the extension of the State of Emergency for the Southside of Belize City, claiming that after being in government for 12 and a half years ago, he is embarrassed that Government finds it necessary to lock up young men from the Southside, including his constituents. He stated that these young men were children “4 years, 6 years, 7 years, 8 years old” when the UDP took office over 12 years ago, and that it is these same young men who are now tormenting the Southside.
According to Elrington he has not seen “any proposal or project come forward to treat the root cause of the problem” which he claims is poverty and ignorance. Elrington was emphatic when he questioned “how is it that a child after 9 months is born a little innocent baby, and in ten, twelve years that baby becomes a monster”. Elrington believes that this is a failure on the part of society but that it has to be a failure “on the part of government” as well.
Elrington was so candid and defeatist in his remarks today that he even chastized the youths in his own Pickstock constituency claiming “I walk all the time in the Pickstock constituency…I pass homes and areas where young men are congregated…they have nothing to do…no skill…no job…no direction”.
After 37 years of independence, Elrington claims that we have failed the young men and women on the Southside of Belize City. Lockdown is not the solution, says Elrington, as the youths seek vengeance when they are released from prison after the lockdown.
