Special meeting of House concerns responses to COVID-19 and extension of Southside State of Emergency

Posted: Monday, August 3, 2020. 11:08 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: At today’s sitting of the House of Representatives, the Government of Belize is proposing amendments to the Immigration, Hotels and Tourist Accommodation Act, and the Quarantine Act, to address gaps related to COVID-19.

Immigrants and visitors to Belize will be specifically told of their duties upon entering the country, while the Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation will be empowered to make regulations in the interest of public safety, order, and health with respect to infectious diseases. The same power will be granted to the Minister of Health under the Quarantine Act to declare all or any part of Belize to be inflicted by or threatened by an infectious disease.

The Government is also bringing a motion to extend the State of Emergency for the southern half of Belize City, commonly known as “Southside,” for two months from Thursday, August 6, when the initial one-month period expires. It was first instituted following a spike in crime, specifically a pair of murders and some robberies.

We’ll have more as the day progresses from Belmopan.
