By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Education says that parents or an adult of their choosing are required to have an Associate Degree for a home schooling license to be granted.
On today’s session of Ask the Experts, Chief Education Officer Dr. Carol Babb said that the Ministry is aware that some parents are fearful of sending their children back to school for the scheduled August 10 reopening due to COVID-19, and that those parents have every right to apply for their home schooling licenses, provided they prove they have the competency and capacity to properly instruct children.
Deputy Chief Education Officer Cecilia Ramirez-Smith said, “By our current standards, that competence level is at an associate degree level. We feel, based on our own requirements for our teachers in our schools, that persons who would have completed academic instruction to the associate level would be able to present to students in a meaningful way, in a way that they can understand instruction at home…”
Remirez-Smith said that parents can call 615-7597 or 615-7402 to secure an application form, or get one from the Ministry’s Facebook page or website (which will be available later today) and drop off the completed form at the nearest district education center along with the required documents requested by the form. Successful applicants will be required to sign an agreement, which outlines the responsibility of the homeschooler and the responsibilities of the Ministry.
She also said that the ministry will be conducting periodic checks to ensure that the child is receiving quality education, including an end-of-year assessment to gauge the effectiveness of the home schooling.
