UB Faculty and Staff Union continues to engage UB on mitigation measures

Posted: Tuesday, August 4, 2020. 10:04 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The University of Belize Faculty and Staff Union (UBFSU) issued a statement informing that it continues to engage the University of Belize’s Administration as it pertains to mitigation measures proposed by the UB Administration, brought upon as an effect of the current global pandemic.

The University has endorsed and recognized UBFSU as the sole bargaining agent for its members.

The UBFSU says that it will continue to negotiate with the Board of Trustees and University of Belize Management team as the certified union UBFSU for its bargaining units.

UBFSU demanded access to the University’s financial data and on Thursday July 30, the union’s auditor was provided some financial data.

“The financial data provided is now being reviewed. Concurrently, UBFSU has been diligently examining the President’s proposals in the light of safeguarding UB’s mission and vision of providing good quality education.

The UBFSU will engage all negotiations on the guiding principles of fairness, equitability, transparency, and protection of its members’ livelihood,” the union says.

While the union has overcome many delays to get at the negotiating table, it is concerned that Senior Administration are moving to drastically change established practice regarding faculty workload, (non) renewal of contracts held against established substantive posts, duties, and terms of reference before negotiating with the UBFSU.

The union noted that these changes will have direct impacts on the quality of education being delivered and require significant consideration and inputs from the union.

“As a result of delays on the part of UB Administration the situation has caused heightened uncertainty, our time to engage on these crucial matters of UB’s future is now extremely compressed. Despite the fraught conditions, the UBFSU will negotiate in good faith with the University Administration to ensure UB’s standards are met and the union’s guiding principles are maintained for each of the proposals,” the union added.

The UBFSU declares to all parties and stakeholders in Belizean tertiary education that it is guided by UB’s motto “Education empowers a nation” as it ensures UB’s commitment to meet national needs and address global challenges while encouraging our sustainable development, and self-sustainability.
