BNTU advises teachers and students to remain OUT of class

Posted: Wednesday, August 5, 2020. 9:40 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) issued a statement today advising teachers and students to remain out of the classroom.

The BNTU says that it has been monitoring the COVID-19 situation in Belize and has concluded that teachers must be discouraged from going back to the classroom and parents must also be discouraged from sending their kids to school.

The BNTU says that it has shared concerns with the Ministry of Education due to lack of readiness for Monday’s reopening.

The BNTU says that the quick escalation of cases is the catalyst for the union’s decision and the imminent threat of community spread is a grave concern.

“We are also yet to see the effects of the reopening of the Philip Goldson airport on August 15, 2020,” the union said.

The BNTU further advises teachers to work on keeping students engaged in distance learning whether online or through home based packages until it is safer for teachers and students to be in the classroom.
