Fort Cairns market to remain closed following 7 new COVID-19 cases in Orange Walk

Posted: Wednesday, August 5, 2020. 12:40 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Earlier today, the Orange Walk Town Council (OWTC) had announced that the Fort Cairns market would reopen for business on Wednesday, August 5, 2020. According to the Council, “the place has been fully sanitized and we can now resume business safely for our community”.

However, in a late night move the OWTC decided to keep the Fort Cairns market closed. This decision was taken following the identification of 15 new COVID-19 cases in Belize, 7 of which are in Orange Walk. A number of the new COVID-19 cases are allegedly linked to the market vendor in Orange Walk and hence the decision to no longer reopen on Wednesday. No date was given for the market to reopen.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the COVID-19 case at the Fort Cairns market vendor is most likely linked to the sale of contraband goods from nearby Mexico. The Town Council is reminder all vendors that no contraband goods will be allowed in the market once the market reopens.
