By BBN Staff: Following a request by five former foreign ministers that the Government of Belize send a correspondence to the Government of Honduras over the mistreatment of the country’s Garifuna population, Opposition Senator Dr. Luis Zabaneh repeated the call at today’s meeting of the senate.
Zabaneh stressed that, despite Belize having numerous problems and the ongoing battle with the COVID-19 pandemic, the country is obligated to speak in defense of the Garinagu people, given the contributions they have made to Belize’s development.
“They are, and have been and continue to be a foundation for the development of our country,” Zabaneh said, “for this to be occurring right next to us, I think it is our responsibility and our obligation to speak out.”
He urged all his Senate colleagues to use whatever platforms available to them to champion the cause of getting justice and humane treatment for the Garinagu in Honduras.
