38 new COVID-19 cases identified in 5 days in Belize – Did we drop our guard?

By BBN Staff: The first week of August, Belize saw an exponential increase in cases of COVID-19.

For the last 5 days, the country has reported 38 new cases of the virus.

Over the weekend, the Ministry of Health detected 9 new cases. And, on August 4, authorities detected 15 new cases making it the highest amount of cases the country has ever seen in one day.

Yesterday, authorities were informed of 14 new cases of COVID-19.

At the start of the pandemic, authorities had implemented strict measures to safeguard the Belizean people from this virus.

However, as the measures were relaxed, people began to drop their guard by attending and hosting large parties.

Over the last few weeks, many Belizeans attended social events including weddings, wakes, funerals, crowded bars, nightclubs etc. and failed to adhere to the health and safety regulations.

Several people also jumped borders to procure contraband items putting themselves and their families at risk of contracting the virus.

“As we move along, we will have to reiterate that we have to assume every person we meet is to be treated as a potential case and for which we must take the necessary safety precautions,” the Office of the Director of Health Services said.
