Belize City on high alert for COVID-19; 100 potential cases to be screened

Posted: Friday, August 7, 2020. 4:44 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Nurse Lorna Perez, Surveillance Officer, makes note that passive surveillance involves those reporting directly to authorities at which time they come out to do contact tracing in what is now called active surveillance.

The lockdown is intended to keep cases contained in the cases of Santa Martha, Orange Walk and San Pedro Town and determine just how they were infected.

In the case of San Pedro, some of the persons infected had interaction with members of other clusters, because the community is still somewhat small.

Belize City is now the next area of concern with more than 100 potential cases to be screened, said Nurse Perez. As the most populated area of the country, the worry is that community spread will be even more significant in Belize City than elsewhere.
