By Aaron Humes: At this critical time, the work of the Belize Coast Guard in stopping illegal activities on the high seas is heavily valued.
This week, the Coast Guard initiated Operation Blue Lightning. In the words of Acting Commandant Gregory Soberanis, it is “a layered security defence strategy that ensures that Belize’s maritime borders remain safe and secure.”
Lieutenant Junior Grade Juan Bulum says the Coast Guard is strategically placed in Consejo, in the Corozal Bay and at Sarteneja. They are on the watch, he said, for trafficking in persons and weapons, and check all vessels for evidence of these and general safety on the waters.
Ensign Mark Choc observes that drug trafficking and contraband from Mexico continue to proliferate, to not mention those who continue to jump the borders. The Coast Guard is on patrol 24/7 to prevent this from happening.
To help, report all suspicious activity immediately to the Guard’s 999 hotline.
