Posted: Friday, August 7, 2020. 8:48 am CST.

By BBN Staff: On August 6, 2020, the United States Department of State published a level 4 alert, warning Americans not to travel to Belize.

The Philip Goldson International Airport remains closed to international visitors.

The warning alerted tourists considering travel to Belize that the borders remain closed.

The State Department also warned Americans that are in Belize to exercise increased caution in Belize due to crime.

Travelers to Belize may experience border closures, airport closures, travel prohibitions, stay at home orders, business closures, and other emergency conditions within Belize due to COVID-19.

In relation to crime, the state department listed violent crimes and noted that they occur even during daylight hours.

“A significant portion of violent crime is gang-related. Due to high crime, travelers are advised to exercise caution while traveling to the south side of Belize City. Local police lack the resources and training to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents. Most crimes remain unresolved and unprosecuted,” the warning said.
