Five more cases of COVID-19 identified in Orange Walk and 2 more in San Pedro

By BBN Staff: Five (5) more cases of COVID-19 were detected in the Orange Walk district and 2 more in San Pedro, to give an additional 7 new cases identified today.

Of the 5 cases in the Orange Walk district, 2 are in Shipyard and according to the COVID-19 update provided by the Ministry of Health, these 2 new cases are “linked to (the) initial cluster which has more than 10 active cases”. The other 3 cases were found in Santa Martha, Yo Creek and August Pine Ridge (1 in each village). The case in Yo Creek is linked to San Pedro and the case in August Pine Ridge is an individual who works in Orange Walk town. The COVID-19 update notes that “contact tracing has started in order to determine possible links”.

According to the Ministry of Health, the 2 cases in San Pedro are linked to a construction site where the majority of workers seem to be from the Orange Walk District. Contact tracing for this site is ongoing and it appears to have a link to one of the two other clusters previously identified on the island.

The Ministry notes that this doesn’t mean that we are not going to be seeing any more cases in the following week. Given the extent of the cases in San Pedro, it is anticipated that new cases will be detected throughout the week.

In order to flatten the curve, health authorities are advising Belizeans to “avoid all mass gatherings and stay home unless it is absolutely necessary for you to go out”.
