Medical and Dental Association demands better working conditions for frontline workers battling COVID-19

Posted: Saturday, August 8, 2020. 4:57 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today the Belize Medical and Dental Association (BMDA) is urging all healthcare workers to be extra cautious going forward after several frontline health personnel have been diagnosed with COVID-19.

“If adequate personal protective gears are not available for work, you have the right to refuse to see patients,” the BMDA said.

The association called upon authorities to ensure that healthcare workers have the necessary protective equipment and are kept from potentially hazardous situations. The association notes that there are reports of a doctor who is now infected with COVID-19 and was required to see patients who had respiratory problems at the flu clinic with only a mask and surgical gloves.

“The Ministry of Health reported having brought thousands of PPE’s but our colleagues do not have access to them,” the Association added.

The BMDA also called on the public to exercise all the preventative measures to protect themselves and the healthcare workers that are charged with their care.
