By Aaron Humes: Senator Dr. Carla Barnett, appearing on Ask The Experts this afternoon, announced that some 49,000 persons have applied for the second round of the Unemployment Relief Program which opened a week ago.
The Government has already spent $35 million on unemployment relief and will spend a further $28 million – $14 million specifically to further relief and $14 million to help small businesses.
But there are glitches being addressed by authorities including not immediately accepting applications (Dr. Barnett noted some enthusiastically hit the enter key but do not get through) and there are issues with multiple names and Social Security numbers in the system.
The text number 613-7542 does not answer calls; it is solely to send messages confirming acceptance of the application. You can also email at [email protected] to seek out your status.
Dr. Barnett said the program continues to assist as many applicants as possible. The payment is $150 every two weeks for 6 payments. Long-term unemployment benefits go through the Ministry of Human Development.
