By BBN Staff: Some 14 Belize Police Department’s San Pedro formation are off the job due to COVID-19.
Officer Commanding the San Pedro Police Formation Superintendent Chris Noble, explained today that five officers tested positive for COVID-19 and are now in quarantine, while an additional nine officers are in self-isolation, having displayed flu-like symptoms. Three of the COVID-19 positive officers are still on the island, however, two of them have returned to the mainland. Noble said that six of the nine officers in self-isolation presented symptoms over the weekend and three officers showed flu-like symptoms today. These officers have been put in self-isolation as a precautionary measure, and pending test results will direct whether they return to work or head into quarantine.
Noble also noted that despite the drop in manpower, police operations on the island have not been adversely affected.
“The staffing on the island is around 87. So we’re managing because our strategy has not changed because the officers being down. We were working overtime to keep it where it is, and now we are doubling the overtime to keep it that way until we are out and over this,” Noble said.
He also noted that measures have been put in place to secure the remaining officers at the station, such as temperature checks prior entry, and ensuring that officers practice proper mask-wearing. San Pedro is currently on full lockdown for the next two weeks under the current state of emergency regulations.
