San Pedro OC calls for mental health assistance for his officers

Posted: Monday, August 10, 2020. 8:10 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Several San Pedro Police officers are either infected with COVID-19 or in self-isolation as a precautionary measure, but since anxiety levels are running high on the island due to the lockdown, the Officer Commanding the San Pedro Police Formation Chris Noble is asking any mental health professional on the island to offer their support to the police.

Noble notes that the COVID-19 situation is a novelty in Belize and the rest of the world and has understandably caused some distress to the officers infected but also to the formation as a whole. He notes that the Belize Police Department does offer psychological support to officers through the Employee Assistance Program (EPA) but that officers have no access to the program since the island is on lockdown.

“My cry would be if you are a professional in that capacity and wants to assist us, please..” Noble said. “…if there is somebody on the island to reach out to me. My number is 600-3533. If you can’t get me via call send me a text.”

Noble said that currently 14 of his officers are off the job, five with positive COVID-19 infections and the other nine in self-isolation with flu-like symptoms, awaiting test results. He has designated officers to routinely provide meals for the officers that are out and says that he tries to remain in contact with them to offer what support he can, but notes that he is not trained in counseling and fells that professional assistance would greatly aid the support system that the officers are providing for each other during this stressful time.
