By BBN Staff: The Belize Livestock Producers’ Association (BLPA) is happy to report that the first formal cattle export to Guatemala for this year occurred today through the Western Border.
The Livestock Marketing Association of Spanish Lookout, Cayo, spearheaded the initiative in collaboration with 3 livestock farmers, namely, Paul Penner, Kenton Plett and Jeffery L Reimer who successfully all the requirements put in place by Guatemalan authorities. A total of 27 animals for fattening were exported today.
The BLPA says it would like to thank “the collective efforts from the Livestock farmers in Spanish Lookout, Livestock Marketing Association, Cattle Export Committee, Belize Agricultural Health Authority, Hon.Godwin Hulse and the Ministry of Agriculture for their tireless efforts in making this export a reality,”.
The association says that it remains committed to assist farmers to facilitate their cattle exports.
Currently Belize has over 180,000 heads of cattle and produces a surplus of 30-40,000 heads per year. For the last 20 years, most of this surplus cattle have been exported to Guatemala informally . The informal exports came to an end earlier this year when the Government of Belize stopped it due to the COVID-19 threat.
