By BBN Staff: Today, the National Students’ Union of Belize (NSUB) officially announced becoming the 12th member of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) and pledged to use the opportunity to support and defend social justice.
The NSUB, which now has access to all the rights afforded to other NTUCB members with the exception of voting, notes that the membership is historic as it is the first student organization of its type in Belize, and the first to be registered under the NTUCB.
“It is in our conviction to improve the quality of education in all tertiary-level institutions in Belize as we are a student-centered organisation that promotes students’ academic, professional, and social growth…,” the NSUB said. “Thus, with the support of the NTUCB, we are better equipped in carrying out our mission by allowing students, who are the future workers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers of this country, to be a part of the decision-making process and amongst the strongest unions of Belize.”
Our newsroom spoke with the founder of the NSUB, Guillermo Berganza, who said that he was inspired by how unions played a role in social transformation within other countries n Latin America and the Caribbean. He stressed that becoming a part of the NTUCB will advance the NSUB’s goals of making Belize a better place for students and all Belizeans.
“We have allowed students to become a part of the decision making process of the NTUCB and amongst the strongest unions of this country,” Berganza said. “Thus we are looking forward to working with our union brothers and sisters and we thank the NTUCB for welcoming us.”
The NSUB was founded back in 2018.
