By BBN Staff: According to a report from The Independent, record numbers of Americans are renouncing their citizenship.
Reports indicate that in the first half of 2020, 5,816 people gave up their US citizenship, a 1,000% increase on the previous six months.
In the year 2019, only 2,072 Americans renounced their citizenship.
Several reports indicate that the reason is the COVID-19 pandemic and some political policies by the US President Donald Trump’s administration.
But, the firm that provided the information informed that most are Americans living outside of the US. There are about 9 million Americans living outside the US.
However, those Americans who retain their citizenship remain eligible for any stimulus payments authorized by the US government in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
