By BBN Staff: The BBC reports that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has approved the mass production of the COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik-V, which he says has passed all the required checks, however; health experts have raised concerns about the vaccine’s readiness for public consumption.
Putin told international media that he is convinced that Gamaleya Institute in Moscow developed the world’s first COVID-19 that can provide sustainable immunity, and that he trusted it enough to give it to one of his two daughters, without specifying which one.
Meanwhile the World Health Organization urged Russia to ensure that all international guidelines for producing a COVID-19 vaccine are adhered to. The BBC noted that Sputnik-V is not listed among the six vaccines being developed in the world that have reached phase three clinical trials, which involve more widespread testing in humans.
The United States’ renowned infectious disease expert, Dr Anthony Fauci, also said that he has serious doubts about the vaccine.
With all the concerns, Russia still plans to begin mass production by October 2020.
