Belize logs 44 new cases of COVID-19

Posted: Wednesday, August 12, 2020. 5:35 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero this evening confirmed that 44 more new cases of COVID-19 have been recorded from 102 samples processed this afternoon, with a further 83 results to come in the next hour or two.

Of these samples, 40 were from San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye and the remaining 4 from Belize City, three of which are linked to San Pedro. The fourth was logged at a flu clinic in the Old Capital and has no link yet established to the others.

The coming samples are said to be mainly from the northern districts of Corozal and Orange Walk.

Earlier Dr. Manzanero had said that the Ministry of Health recommends but does not have final say on decisions to quarantine and lock down the country, that is the province of the Government with support from the Opposition.

And even a countrywide lockdown as some suggest is not enough at this juncture if the other measures are not adhered to.

Dr Manzanero confirmed that Belize is on a curve which needs to be flattened quickly to avoid catastrophe and reminded that COVID-19 is here to stay for the most part and the situation needs to be internalized by the populace.
