By Aaron Humes: Some of the recent supplies donated by the Republic of India are yet to arrive in Belize, including a supply of hydroxychloroquine.
The malaria drug has been hailed by some as relieving symptoms of COVID-19, but the literature has been muddled and Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services, says he does not support its usage at the moment.
Remdesivir has also been rated successful but generally, Dr. Manzanero says we treat for the presenting symptoms depending on each patient. There is no one catch-all medicine being used.
As for vaccines, the recently created Russian vaccine according to Dr Manzanero does not have results from a phase 3 trial and very little information on the first two phases, making its efficacy uncertain.
Some 174 vaccines are in trial, but it is necessary to reduce the threat of side effects before a successful one is approved.
Belize is in negotiations, Dr Manzanero confirmed, to be among countries to obtain a successful vaccine when one is available.
In the end, Dr Manzanero advises that the best way to avoid COVID-19 is to keep to the established guidelines and personally eat properly, exercise and boost one’s immune system. And of course assume that anyone you meet is a potential COVID-19 case, even you.
