By BBN Staff:  Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says that police have detained a man following a social media post in which he said that he wants to intentionally contract COVID-19 to deliberately infect others.

Commissioner Williams said via his Facebook page that Ryan A. Gentle is in police custody and will be swabbed then placed into quarantine until his results have been issued.

Gentle posted a selfie on his Facebook account today of him being outdoors while not wearing a mask and captioned it, “Working with no mask…I
want catch COVID-19 and spread it Lol.”

Following intense public backlash, Gentle deleted the photo and said that he was only joking at the time.

Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte warned the nation last week that police will be aggressively enforcing the regulations under the newly-instituted state of emergency, in an effort to minimize the impact of Belize’s second wave of COVID-19, which has been considerably worse than the first.
