By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: When we think about the word MVP, we know that it refers to the Most Valuable Player on a team. But for now, the medical health professionals led by Dr. Marvin Manzanero are the real MVPs in Belize – they are on the frontline battling the COVID-19 pandemic as it continues to affect our nation.

Belize’s health professionals are tasked with the most crucial, important and challenging jobs ever, leaving their homes daily, interacting with the public, collecting and preparing samples for processing and testing, conducting contact tracing in the field, keeping the public informed and most importantly caring for those infected with COVID-19.

Daily we wait to get updates via press briefings, info graphics, or press statements from Dr. Manzanero. However, there is an entire health team working tirelessly around the clock to monitor active cases and detect new ones in order for real time information to be shared with us.

On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to casually witness from a distance (of course) as health professionals prepared before entering a home to swab a patient.

The first part of the process was changing to put on personal protective gear, including covering hair, hands and feet.

And, after taking the swab and exiting the building, I saw the care and continuous tedious process taken to undress from the personal protective gear and dispose of all items.

The main nurse, assisted by another nurse, then sprayed continuously her entire uniform after removing the suit.

She threw away the gloves and other items worn as part of the protective gear/equipment.

Overall, the entire process took about 2 hours. This is a huge part of what happens “behind the scenes” and the arduous task done daily by the field staff.

Our health professionals are directly exposed to COVID-19 in their line of duty and should be duly considered our MVPs.

I urge you all to continue avoid large gatherings, to wear your face masks, wash hands frequently, practice physical distancing and adhere to all regulations.

Above all, let us keep our nation in prayers, and honor our health and front line workers working relentlessly to battle this virus.
