By BBN Staff: BBC news reports that the 71-year-old President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, helped to rescue two women whose kayaks capsized off the coast of a popular beach.
The president had just wrapped up a press interview when he noticed the two women struggling and literally dove into the water to swim to their rescue.
Witnesses recorded the heroic moment on camera and a video shows the president and another brave man rendering aid to the women. Someone one a jet ski arrived soon after to help flip the kayak and tow it back to shore.
The president, who was enjoying his holiday in the area, told reporters that the women had been swept by strong currents into the bay from a neighboring beach.
President Rebelo de Sousa is reportedly in the area on holiday in an effort to promote the country’s tourism industry, which has been significantly impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic as many other countries have been.
