By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health says that it is swamped with repeated requests from various individuals for COVID-19 testing. However, in countries that are resource strapped, international guidelines and best practices say that only symptomatic patients are to be tested. Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero, notes that these guidelines are endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and are now being followed by most resource strapped countries in the world.
Manzanero added that the WHO also amended the procedure for discharge of patients in quarantine, from two negative test results after the quarantine period, to 10 days after the positive results with an additional three (3) days of being symptom free. “So on average it’s 13 days after displaying symptoms that you can go back to work,” Manzanero said.
He noted that Belizeans abroad had pointed out that the requirement to have a positive PCR test upon applying to come home was difficult because most countries are now adhering to the standards of only testing those displaying symptoms.
