By Aaron Humes: Lord Michael Ashcroft is stepping forward to help keep the Belize Zoo alive.
Shortly after our story on the Zoo’s uncertain future was published and tweeted this morning, Lord Ascroft tweeted, “This is worthy of support…thank you for bringing it to our attention…I’m arranging a donation of $20,000 from my COVID-19 fund…”
The fund, established at the height of the pandemic here, has been assisting with various relief efforts, including donations to the Ministry of Education for re-opening of schools, and health supplies for the Ministry of Health.
Founding Director of the Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center as it is formally known, Sharon Matola, told BBN that the Zoo is currently open by appointment only and is surviving on the generosity of donations by merchants and individuals to feed the 125 animals housed at its compound on the George Price Highway, and keep its staff employed.
If you would like to donate as well, contact 822-8000 to coordinate on the type of donation you would like to make and how best to get it to “The Best Little Zoo in the World.”
