A.G.: Regulations are “one step forward, two steps backward”

Posted: Saturday, August 22, 2020. 8:52 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte has noted that as recently as two weeks ago, he was announcing some lifting of restrictions under the State of Emergency regulations.

Last week, he had to announce a reversal of part of the regulations and tonight establishes more rollbacks.

He said he was reminded of the soca song containing the lyrics “one step forward, two steps backward and tremble” in that some of the regulations are the same as had been in place a few weeks ago.

And the reason for this, he reminds, is due to those who acted selfishly and exposed Belize to the spread of COVID-19.

In lock-down areas – Guinea Grass, Shipyard and Santa Martha in Orange Walk District and San Pedro Town – certain food mills and agricultural facilities may operate 24 hours a day, and those working on those compounds would not be in violation of any law, at least for now.
