More that 23 million COVID-19 cases reported worldwide, deaths keep climbing

By BBN Staff: The global COVID-19 pandemic has now affected over 23 million people and killed over 800,000.

Worldometer reports that as of 8:00 a.m. today, Sunday, August 23, 2020, more than 23.413 million people have contracted the virus and 809,295 have died.

There are currently 6.658 million active cases, with 99 percent of those being listed as mild, while one percent (61,643) are listed as critical. This split has remained fairly consistent throughout the life of the pandemic.

The United States continues to lead global infections, with over 5.842 million cases, and 180, 193 deaths. Brazil is the second-most hit country by the pandemic with over 3.583 million cases and 114,287 deaths. India’s rapid rise in reported cases has placed it as the world’s third-most hit country, now with over 3.050 million cases and 56,883 deaths.

Notably almost 16 million people have recovered from the virus.
