By BBN Staff: The Government of Belize has given special approval to increase the maximum amount of overtime hours that healthcare workers can claim for.
The Ministry of Finance (MOF) circulated a memo today, noting that the provision will apply to healthcare workers who are required to be on duty (in excess of the norm) under the special circumstances of the state of emergency.
The provisions were provided within the parameters: a maximum of 40 hours per month for the months of June, July, and August; a maximum of 35 hours for the month of September; and a maximum of 30 hours for the month of October.
The Ministry stressed that overtime is not intended to substitute salaries, but is rather a benefit paid out for circumstances where a public officer has performed duties in excess of those hours specified in the public service regulations.
“Furthermore all efforts must be made at the managerial and supervisory level to ensure that the benefits paid out are commensurate with tasks undertaken at all time; and that collectively we make the best use of our limited resources on all levels,” the Ministry said.
