How COVID-19 spreads – the math behind infections

Posted: Monday, August 24, 2020. 3:11 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: There is some math involved in the infection of persons with COVID-19 as explained by Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero.

Typically, persons alone shed 20 viral particles per minute. It takes 1,000 such particles to meet the threshold for infection. But you can shed many more with certain actions.

Coughing releases up to 3,000 droplets and sneezing twice as many, at 50 miles per hour. Talking or even breathing next to someone without a mask can carry some risk, especially in closed environments.

This is the primary reason for wearing masks and social and physical distancing and it is reminded that everyone must be treated as potentially having COVID-19 until proven otherwise.
