By BBN Staff: Among its many recommendations to fight COVID-19-related stress, the Ministry of Health is encouraging Belizeans to focus on situations and tasks that are within their control.

The MOH’s Mental Health Coordinator, Iveth Quintanilla, said today, that the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic is one of the major sources of anxiety, which is why focusing on controllable tasks is critical to countering that stress.

She noted that focusing on tasks such as the preventative measures recommended by the Ministry such hand washing, physical, distancing, proper cough etiquette, is an important practice both for the protection it provides from the virus and the feeling of security and control it gives to those focusing on those tasks.

“Another thing that we can do is acknowledge feelings. Whatever it is you are feeling right now, know that it is okay to feel that way,” Quintanilla said.  “Allow yourself time to notice and Express what you are feeling. This could be done by journaling, talking with others, or even channeling your emotions into something creative.”

She recommended actions such as listening to music, drawing, painting and mindfulness meditation. She also recommended establishing daily routines and sticking to them as much as possible as this will also have a positive effect on one’s mental health.
