Chicago man runs 62 miles to raise over $18,000 to support education in southern Belize

By BBN Staff: A man from Northbrook Chicago, ran 62 miles in 14 hours to raise funds to assist children in southern Belize with scholarships to attend high school.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Johnny Felsenthal III, founder of the charity organization Ultra For Education, had raised some US$9,880 by Tuesday, August 25 from the initiative, which has a target of US$10,000. Felsenthal intends to give the funds to the James Arthur Albert Foundation, an Iowa-based organization that provides education assistance to Belizean students.

The Tribune notes that Felsenthal held the “Ultramarathon” on Saturday, August 22, determined to hold the race and raise the funds in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused the cancellation of another marathon he was preparing to participate in.

“By the end, I was hallucinating that there were bugs on the ground,” Felsenthal said. “But the crazy thing is, the body is capable of so much more than you think, and I told myself, ‘You can bend a little bit, but you can’t fold.’ I was taking it one step at a time.”

The James Arthur Albert Foundation reports that, as of December 2019, it has awarded 1,905 scholarships for high school and university students to go to school, and purchased $326,309 worth of textbooks, uniforms, shoes, school lunches, and school fees for them.
