Posted: Wednesday, August 26, 2020. 8:25 am CST.

By BBN Staff: After tearing through the Caribbean over the weekend, Hurricane Marco weakened to a Tropical Storm, while Tropical Storm Laura upgraded to a Category 1 Hurricane.

The latest update on Marco and Laura, issued today says that Marco made landfall along the coast of Louisiana late on Monday (Aug. 24), bringing rainfall, gusty winds and storm surge just before weakening into a post-tropical cyclone. Marco still has the possibility to bring heavy rains, but meteorologists say it no longer carries the potential to bring tornadoes.

Meanwhile, forecasters are concerned as Hurricane Laura is expected to strengthen into a major Category 3 storm by the time it makes landfall along the Louisiana and Texas coasts early Thursday, August 26.

Both storms battered countries in the Caribbean on Sunday, leaving at least nine people dead in Haiti and another three in the Dominican Republic. They also brought heavy rains to Cuba and Puerto Rico.
