By Aaron Humes: PUP leader John Briceno turned the microphone on a few of the party’s health experts during today’s policy launch.
Senator and nurse Isabel Bennett spoke of a tired, overworked medical population that has been failing to get the ear of their bosses.
Others pointed out that with regard to COVID-19, many more are walking around with the virus in their bloodstream than is known and the Ministry of Health is risking lives by not doing more testing.
And the testing being done now is “useless” because of the heavy turnaround time, which ties workers’ hands in how to manage patients, the PUP said.
From the economic perspective, former economic co-czar Christopher Coye said the Government had not gone far enough to reduce liquidity in the banking system, keeping loan interest rates severely high to help businesses. This leads to greater stress for workers across the country.
Coye described the advent of the Unemployment Relief Program and Food Assistance Program and Development Finance Corporation line of credit for the tourism industry as “a drop in the bucket” in what is needed to get the economy moving again.
