Hurricane Laura plows through Louisiana and Texas killing 3 people

By BBN Staff: Hurricane Laura roared ashore as a powerful category 4 storm tearing up roofs and leaving widespread damage across parts of Louisiana and Texas.

Three people lost their lives during the storm.

Laura made landfall around 1 a.m. with sustained winds of 150 miles per hour. By 10 this morning, the storm was still raging 100 miles inland over Louisiana now at a category 1 strength.

Officials urged residents to take shelter and turn off air conditioning since smoke was rising from a chemical plan fire in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Many communities were left littered with wind destruction.

The National Hurricane Center says that Laura is forecasted to move northward across  northern Louisiana this afternoon.

The center of Laura is forecast  to move over Arkansas tonight, the mid-Mississippi Valley on Friday,  and the mid-Atlantic states on Saturday.

Laura is expected to weaken and become a tropical storm within the next few hours and weaken to a tropical depression tonight.

A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Sabine Pass Texas to Port Fourchon Louisiana.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for High Island Texas to the Mouth of the Mississippi River.
