PGIA to re-open October 1

Posted: Friday, August 28, 2020. 3:26 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The government now plans to re-open the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA) for other returning Belizeans and tourists on October 1, Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced.

By that time, the stakeholders will have been trained and the movement through the airport will be “down pat,” the P.M. assured.

More importantly, American Airlines has committed to begin flights to Belize, five days a week, on that date. United Airlines is prepared to extend its flights beyond repatriations on that date as well. Delta Airlines had been prepared to re-start in September but after announcing cutbacks in its routes domestically and internationally, has committed to re-start in November from Atlanta, Georgia.

With the Abbott tests possibly available by that time, the P.M. added, it is possible tourists could test themselves on arrival here or at home, at their choice.

It could also mean an earlier return for cruise ship arrivals. The three major visitors here, Norwegian, Carnival and Royal Caribbean, had put off visits until 2021, but that could change and “our stars can start coming back into alignment and not a moment too soon.”
