Tropical wave with high chance of development may affect Belize this week says NEMO in Advisory No. 1

By BBN Staff: Late this evening, the National Meteorological Services of Belize (NMS) and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) issued Advisory No. 1 for the general public to pay attention to a westward-moving tropical wave that is located over the eastern Caribbean Sea just west of the Windward Islands. The advisory notes that “associated shower and thunderstorm activity continues to show signs of organization, and environmental conditions are expected to gradually become more conducive for development”.

According to the Met Service, the system has a 70% chance of development int he next 48 hours, and is likely to form a tropical depression during the next day or two as the system moves westward at about 15 miles per hour across the central Caribbean Sea. as Belize is in the projected path of the tropical wave, the Met Service and NEMO will continue to closely monitor this system. Jamaica, Honduras, Guatemala and the Yucatan area are also advised to monitor the progress of this disturbance. 

The advisory notes that “it is possible that the system could start affecting Belize as early as Thursday” and as such ‘the public is advised to remain vigilant and to be prepared for possible storm arrival in accordance with your emergency plan”. Residents are advised to move early if there is a need to relocate of evacuate.
