Venezuela signs deal with Russia to produce its COVID-19 vaccine

By BBN Staff: Reuters reports that Venezuela has signed a deal with Russia to produce its COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V, which was developed by the Gamaleya Scientific Research Institute.

The announcement reportedly came from Venezuela’s Health Minister Carlos Alvarado last Thursday; however, he noted that the countries have signed confidentiality agreements with respect to the details of the production. The countries are also about to start the selection process for possible candidates to test the vaccine.

Reuters quotes Alvarado as saying “Our Russian colleagues are in total willingness to join us and help us to speed up the vaccine production and incorporate it into phase 3 (human testing stage).”

Alvarado also said that his country will be making necessary adjustments for the production and that Venezuelan authorities are reviewing the county’s packaging capabilities for the vaccine.

Venezuela’s announcement of producing the vaccine comes after the August 15 announcement by Russia’s Health Minister, Mikhail Murashko, that Venezuela would be producing the first batch of Sputnik V. Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro also said at that time that he would be first to be vaccinated once the vaccine is available, and then he would proceed to vaccinate healthcare workers and the elderly.
