By BBN Staff: Today, the Ministry of Works (MOW) notified the public that on Tuesday, September 1 and Wednesday September 2, 2020, they will be widening the temporary access road at mile 38 1/2 on the George Price Highway near St. Matthews village.
The decision to urgently widen the temporary access road is most likely related to flooding that may be caused by Tropical Storm Nana which is expected to affect Belize on Thursday afternoon.
On Thursday, June 8th this portion of the highway was washed away due to heavy flooding in the area and traffic was backed up for hours on the George Price Highway. The Ministry of Works mobilized late into the night was able to install temporary culverts and fill to facilitate crossing. This temporary crossing is intact, remains in place and according to the MOW it will be widened today and tomorrow.
The Ministry advises the public to “adhere to all safety measures” and “apologizes for any inconveniences caused”.
