Work called off for teachers, schools activated as hurricane shelters for approaching storm

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of education, in light of the approaching Tropical Strom Nana, which is expected to make landfall as a hurricane in Belize, has advised managing authorities of schools to call off work tomorrow.

In a memo issued today by the Ministry, Chief Education Officer Dr. Carol Babb told managing authorities to ensure that teachers and principals make every effort to safeguard important documents and school buildings. Babb also asked managing authorities of schools designated as hurricane shelters to hand over the relevant keys to the National Emergency Management Organization.

“Those schools that are hurricane shelters must put away important documents and furniture in a separate classroom that is not accessible to the public,” Babb said.

Teachers had recently been back in schools preparing their classrooms for the eventual resumption of classes and preparing home-based learning materials for students for the September 7 distance-learning reopening of schools.
