New COVID-19 quarantine regulations passed; state of emergency and curfew lifted on Friday

Posted: Thursday, September 3, 2020. 5:27 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Effective midnight Friday, the State of Emergency imposed at the start of August expires and Belize lives under more relaxed restrictions due to COVID-19.

Minister of Health and responsible for quarantine, Pablo Marin, has instituted Statutory Instrument 126, the Quarantine (Prevention of the Spread of Infectious Disease) (COVID-19) Regulations, 2020, now widely distributed.

One imposition to be removed is the night-time curfew of 9 p.m. to five a.m. which ends when the SI takes effect at midnight on September 4, 2020.

Other regulations remain the same, including mandatory wearing of masks; mandatory social distancing of six feet; limits on mass gatherings to ten persons or fewer and banning of social events except for funerals, weddings, and parties among families at a residence; limits on exercise including cycling; regulations for public transport; and penalties both for those flouting the rules and those encouraging them.
