Belmopan Area Representative John Saldivar urges developer of unlicensed market project to respect City Council regulations

Posted: Friday, September 4, 2020. 8:55 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Following a heated exchange between police and vendors this morning, Belmopan Area Representative John Saldivar, made a statement this morning calling on the developer of the private market to respect the authority of the city council.

“The Belmopan City Council Act is very clear. When it comes to markets and slaughterhouses, the Council is the sole authority to establish, regulate, control, construct, maintain, and manage such facilities,” Saldivar said.

He noted that he is not personally opposed to having a privately managed market in the area, but that any such facility must have the approval of the city council. Saldivar stresses that ignoring laws for the sake of development would invite a state of anarchy in municipal affairs and called on the residents of Belmopan to stand with the city council in ensuring that the law is upheld.

“Investors in Belmopan must respect the authority of the Mayor and his Council and abide by our laws which require them to make an application to the Council and receive approval prior to the commencement of any business,” Saldivar added.
