By BBN Staff: Answering a question on today’s session of the government program Ask the Experts, Dr. Marvin Manzenero, director of Health Services in the Ministry of Health, stressed that ventilators are not a means of treating COVID-19.

Manzanero acknowledged that there is a growing sentiment that patients who are ventilated end up dying, and further acknowledged that half the patients on ventilators have died thus far, but that the ventilators were not being used to treat those patients.

“A ventilation mechanism is done once the patient has respiratory failure and  you’re not going to be able to recover that patient…” Manzanero said. “It’s used when the patient has multiple organ failure or is having severe respirations failure.”

Manzanero added that ventilators are not exclusively used on COVId-19 patients, noting that there are several other conditions that require ventilation such as cardiac failure and sepsis.
