Tropical weather tracker: Trio of systems in Atlantic and Caribbean monitored

Posted: Sunday, September 6, 2020. 7:26 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Another tropical depression could soon form in the Atlantic.

FOX 35 in Orlando, Florida, is currently tracking three separate systems in the Atlantic. They are all currently areas of disorganized showers that could have the potential for development.

The system closest to land, currently churning in the central Caribbean Sea, has just a 10 percent chance of development as it does not have much time to develop. It is nearing the Yucatan Peninsula.

The second system, in the middle of the Atlantic, has the highest likelihood of becoming the next tropical depression. It could form by the end of the weekend or early next week. It has a 90 percent chance of development.

Finally, there is a tropical wave moving off the western coast of Africa which has an 80 percent chance of developing.

The next named storm which develops will be called Paulette.

So far, 15 named storms have formed during the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season. If all 26 names are used, the letters of the Greek alphabet will be used.

The last time the Greek alphabet was used in the Atlantic was in 2005, the year of Hurricane Katrina. With a total of 27 storms that year, the first six letters of the Greek alphabet were used: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon and Zeta.

The hurricane season continues until the end of November.
